The well-known racing driver Lewis Hamilton won the Styrian Grand Prix on Sunday, in Spielberg, Austria.
After the victory, Mercedes driver Hamilton raised a clenched right fist on the podium to show his support to the ‘Black Lives Matter‘ movement. He also wore a black t-shirt, which read “End Racism” and took the knee for the same reason, before the national anthem.
Hamilton, who has been exposed to racist acts throughout his career, wrote on regarding the race he won:
“We stand together and fight. The team today took the knee which was just amazing to see that together we can learn, be open-minded, and conscious of what’s going on in the world. Today we won but we have a long way to go.”
After referring to the ‘Black Lives Matter’ movement, Lewis Carl Davidson Hamilton thanked his teammates:
“Thank you so much to everyone in my team, here at the track and back at the factory. I hope you are proud of what we are standing for and achieving together. A huge thanks to all of you #TeamLH, I appreciate all of your support and your positive messages, you’ve really kept me going 🙏#StillWeRise”
As might be remembered, Hamilton had criticized the authorities in Formula One for their silence, after the death of George Floyd, and called out to them to raise their voices against racial inequality.
