‘Don’t Start Now’ singer Dua Lipa received the Powerhouse Award, which is given the musicians dominating the year with streaming, sales and radio, at the 2020 Billboard Women in Music virtual event, on December 11.
The award was presented to the singer by her “personal hero,” politician Bernie Sanders, who has served as the junior United States senator. Sanders, who previously discussed healthcare in England and the United States of America with the singer during a virtual chat back in October, said regarding Lipa ahead of the presentation of the award:
“She has said loudly and clearly, with her actions, that now is the time to fight for a better future for all. She’s fighting for young people, women, refugees, the LGBTQ community. She’s using her platform to bring people into the democratic process. She’s raising her voice to demand real change.”
Vermont Senator referred first the abovementioned Zoom meeting and then Lipa’s song ‘New Rules,’ by saying:
“I spoke with Dua over Zoom a few weeks ago, and it is clear to me that she knows the rules have to change, that it is time for ‘new rules’ to create a world that works for all of us and not just the very wealthy.”
To show her gratitude regarding both the award and the sayings of Sanders, the ‘Prisoner‘ singer took to her verified Instagram account and shared a series of posts respectively. Lipa first uploaded a video of Sanders, which includes his speech during the Billboard Women in Music virtual event, and captioned it as follows:
“So honoured to have been presented with the Powerhouse Award at Billboard Women In Music Awards by a personal hero of mine and BFF Senator @berniesanders !! wow wow wow THANK YOU @billboard 🖤🖤🖤🖤”
Then Lipa, who performed ‘Boys Will Be Boys‘ during the show, thanked Billboard in another Instagram post for inviting her for opening performance and added:
“Thank you for having us open the show and allowing me to perform a song that means so much to me and that I probably wouldn’t have had the chance to perform like this for any other occasion. Thank you to my wonderful team who helped bring my Fantasia dreams to life.”
