American musician Lizzo, the most-known advocate for body positivity and self-love, appeared on the cover of Vogue magazine’s October issue and became the first Black, plus-sized woman to do so.
The rapper, born Melissa Viviane Jefferson, celebrated it by uploading a photo of the cover to her verified Instagram account and inspired black girls to pursue their dreams. She wrote the caption that reads:
“I am the first big black woman on the cover of @voguemagazine. The first black anything feels overdue. But our time has come. To all my black girls, if someone like you hasn’t done it yet— BE THE FIRST.”
As one’s known, the ‘Truth Hurts’ singer had been the target of body shaming because of her plus-size for a long time; however, she changed the game and gave visibility to larger women.
The official Instagram account for Vogue Magazine released the big news through the following message:
“@lizzobeeating is our October issue cover star! At a time of unprecedented strife, struggle, and opportunity, Vogue meets up—at a distance—with #Lizzo, the musical sage who wants us to get through this moment together.”
Besides, Vogue has announced that Lizzo is not only magazine’s October cover star, she will also be speaking at this year’s “Forces of Fashion” event, scheduled for November 16 and 17.
Following Lizzo’s post, an Instagram user addressed the changes in the fashion industry and the media via the following comment:
“Man. When I think that it was only 20 or 25 years ago when Vogue wouldn’t put THE Oprah Winfrey on the cover unless she lost some weight? This feels significant. Congratulations.”
So, it is obvious that body positivity is breaking more and more taboos around female sexuality and body image each passing day.
