Former model Paulina Porizkova, who captured media attention recently with her statement that she was not able to buy her groceries after her husband Ric Ocasek’s died in 2019, took to her verified Instagram account on March 22, to pay tribute to Atlanta Spa Shootings victims and suggest a piece of solution regarding hate crimes and racism.
‘A Model Summer‘ author first released an image with the names of victims, Robert Aaron Long, Xiaojie Tan, Delaina Yaun, Paul Andre Michels, Daoyou Feng, Yong Ae Yue, Hyun Jung Grant, Soon Chung Park, and Soon Chung Park. Alongside the image, Porizkova added a long caption that begins as follows:
“Once again I have to re-examine my own beliefs here. The fact is, that insisting on NOT seeing racism IS racism. Stereotyping a race, even if it’s a flattering stereotype – is still racism.”
The model then stated that not acknowledging how history shaped the present is a way not to feel like a racist, and addressed the collective responsibility as the solution to eliminate the racism towards Asian Americans:
“I know many reject this collective guilt of wrong-doings in the past, believing that if they have personally not been racists- why should they now feel guilty? Well, guilt is only useful in so far as a moral compass. In itself- it certainly solves nothing. But what if we use it to motivate us to become better, to do better?”
However, a great number of Porizkova’s fans jumped into the comments section to say that they do not agree with her; they claimed that they do not need to feel guilty while standing against racism & hate crimes. It seems that the model’s latest post did not reach the people at all.
