Singer & songwriter Cyndi Lauper, who received numerous accolades throughout her musical career including American Music Awards, Billboard Awards, Grammys, MTV Video Music Awards, Emmys, and Tonys, celebrated the 37th anniversary of her legendary hit, ‘Time After Time,’ by revealing the untold history behind it.
On her verified Instagram account, the ‘She’s So Unusual‘ hitmaker included two videos – two clips from the music video for the said song – and announced that ‘Time After Time’ turned 37 as of the date of January 27. As known, it was released as a single on January 27, 1984, by Epic Records.
After delivering the exciting news, Lauper continued her message by telling of the creation process of the song that she shared with the well-known singer and songwriter Rob Hyman:
“Sometimes in our conversations Rob would say something that struck me, and I’d write it down. Like he referred to a ‘suitcase of memories.’ I thought that was a wonderful line so I used it in ‘Time after Time.'”
Then the living legend stated that the other line ‘Lying in my bed I hear the clock tick’ came from the loud clock the two had in their apartment. Stating that the song, which was nominated for a Grammy Award for Song of the Year in 1985, was created with the help of the tiny details belongs her personal life, Lauper continued:
“And the part about ‘the second hand unwinds’ was from Rick’s watch. For some reason, it was going backward instead of forward. He kept saying,“Look at this, the second hand is unwinding.” I just looked at him and I’m like, “Oh my God, the second-hand unwinding?” and wrote it down.”
At the end of the caption, one of the “100 Greatest Women of Rock & Roll” also revealed that she always gets inspiration to write a piece of music from daily conversations that she shares with friends. She concluded her words by saying that she “always look for words that chew well and sing well.”
As widely known, the song, which was launched as the second single from her debut album ‘She’s So Unusual,’ became Lauper’s first no.1 single on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart in addition to its success on the UK Singles Chart and ARIA single charts the same year.
