Body positivity advocate Lizzo, born Melissa Viviane Jefferson, became the subject of controversy after she posted a series of videos that show she is following a 10-day detox program.
The singer, who has been praised for self-confidence and activism against body-shaming, received backlashes from a great number of people for promoting diet culture.
‘The Good Place’ star Jameela Jamil, who is another body positivity activist, took to both Twitter and Instagram accounts to talk about Lizzo’s latest posts. Jamil first wrote that she loves Lizzo, who “has pioneered fat acceptance more effectively than anyone else in the history of media” and continued:
“However, it is still her choice to eat what she wants, and get bigger or smaller. She doesn’t owe anyone anything. BUT when celebrities endorse lifestyle choices it’s important for them to be very clear about the science of what they are doing.”
Whereupon, the ‘Truth Hurts‘ hitmaker had to go to Instagram one more time to clarify why she embarked on a juice cleanse, that is not recommended by numerous dietitians. Lizzo posted a photo of herself, which sees her wearing just briefs, and she wrote alongside it:
“I detoxed my body and I’m still fat. I love my body and I’m still fat. I’m beautiful and I’m still fat. These things are not mutually exclusive.”
Then the singer urged people, who took to her, not to starve themselves to detox their bodies; and said that she fed herself greens, water, fruit, protein, and sunlight. The 32-year-old star concluded her message by saying how much she loves her body, as she always does.
“You don’t have to do that to be beautiful or healthy. That was my way. You can do life your way. Remember, despite anything anyone says or does ✨DO WHAT YOU WANT WITH YOUR BODY✨”
