Megan Thee Stallion proves again that she is a powerful voice on the way Black women are seeking their rights in a world full of sexism and racism.
The ‘Body’ rapper, born Megan Jovon Ruth Pete, took to her verified Instagram the other day to tell the world that she has got a moving letter from well-known politician Maxine Waters, serving as the U.S. Representative for California, regarding her New York Times essay, titled ‘Why I Speak Up for Black Women.’ The rapper posted the letter to her page, and wrote alongside it:
“One of the highlights of my year was getting a letter from Congress Woman @repmaxinewaters 💙 I am so honored to be recognized by such an amazing woman and I promise to keep using my voice and encourage others to use theirs !”
In the letter, Waters thanked Stallion for her contribution to the struggle of Black women all around the world and wrote that she read the essay for NY Times with huge gratitude for the rapper, who brings “much-needed attention to the plight of Black women.” The California representative continued:
“While we are too often overlooked, there is no doubt that Black women are a glue for our families and communities and a crucial part of the fabric of this country.”
Waters expressed that she is proud of the ‘WAP’ rapper for using her platform to raise her voice against inequality and violence in addition to uplifting women. Stating that Pete paved the way for Black women with her courage and bravery, Waters said that she would always side with the rapper.
“I know that Black women and girls everywhere thank you for the way you so fiercely have their back. I want you to know that I have your back too. (…) Stay well, keep fighting, and take care. We need your voice in this fight.”
In the letter, the representative also cited Pete’s own words, she used in the said essay:
“We need to protect our Black women and love our Black women, because at the end of the day, we need our Black women.”
