Singer and songwriter Jhené Aiko earned 3 Grammy Award nominations for Album of the Year, Best Progressive R&B Album, and Best R&B Performance, with the official announcement by the Record Academy on March 6, 2020.
In order to express her feeling about Grammy nominations, which has caused great controversy among certain musicians such as Justin Bieber, Nicki Minaj and The Weeknd, Aiko took to her verified Instagram account. She first wrote that the nominations made her humbled and honored and expressed that being recognized professionally means so much to her.
Then the singer shared a highly sad story concerning her late uncle, Cappy; according to what she wrote, the same hour the Grammy nominations were officially announced, she received a call that her uncle died of COVID-19. She described that moment as “bittersweet” and added that she is not going to forget. After that continued to telling that grabbing the nominations; she said:
“Anyone who has ever put their entire being into making an album or any piece of art knows, it is no easy feat. mentally, physically and spiritually draining, but also rewarding and fulfilling when you finally decide it’s complete and get to share it. as artists, writers, musicians, creators, etc…”
The ‘Bed Peace’ singer highlighted connecting people with her music and helping them by hearing their stories is much more than getting a nomination. Instead of the Recording Academy, Aiko thanked her fans and followers for inspiring her to continue in her purpose.
Meanwhile, Jhené Aiko’s partner, musician Big Sean, born Sean Michael-Leonard Anderson, celebrated the nominations with an Instagram post. Alongside a series of photos of two, Anderson wrote:
“We woke up one morning to @recordingacademy nominations and the Pacific Ocean n each other, and I am honored and grateful to live the life I do. Thank you!”
