Taylor Swift spoke out about news of the sale of her catalog by Scooter Braun.
The singer took to Twitter and released an open letter regarding the record executive, purchasing the rights of Swift’s first six albums from Big Machine Label Group, in June 2019.
The singer, who has been trying to acquire ownership of the master recordings for years, said in her lengthy statement that her team attempted to reach an agreement with Braun’s team. However, the Braun team intended to make the singer sign a non-disclosure agreement (NDA) and wanted her not to critize the producer any more:
“Scooters team wanted me to sign an ironclad NDA stating I would never say another word about Scooter Braun unless it was positive before we could even look at the financial records of BMLG (which is always the first step in a purchase of this nature.”
Then Swift added that she would have to sign a document that not allows her to speak out about the agreement and Braun and to perform her own songs in the concert as well. She continued:
“My legal team said that this is absolutely NOT normal, and they’ve never seen an NDA like this presented unless it was to silence an assault accuser by paying them off. He would never even quote my team a price.”
She highlighted those master recordings, belonging to her, were not for sale to her. As fans remember, Braun sold Swift’s masters and artworks to a private equity company called, Shamrock Holdings for $300 million. Regarding this issue, she wrote that the sale was made without her knowledge.
“They wanted to reach out before the sale to let me know, but that Scooter Braun had required that they make no contact with me or my team, or the deal would be off.”
For this reason, she refused to become an equity partner with the said company. Swift also touched on again that she would not allow Braun to continue to profit from her work.
