Demi Lovato performed her politically-charged song ‘Commander in Chief’ that directly criticized President Donald Trump‘s leadership, for the first time, at the 2020 Billboard Music Awards.
During the ceremony held at Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, the singer & songwriter seated behind a piano and sang the song whose verse is as follows:
“Commander in Chief, honestly / If I did the things you do, I couldn’t sleep / Seriously, do you even know the truth? / We’re in a state of crisis, people are dying / While you line your pockets deep / Commander in Chief / How does it feel to still be able to breathe?”
The song, written by Justin Tranter, Julia Michaels, Finneas, and Eren Cannata alongside Lovato herself, was released as a single by Island Records on October 14, 2020. Regarding the ‘Commander in Chief’ that was marked as “a response to the 2020 United States presidential election,” Lovato wrote on her verified Instagram account a shortly before her live performance:
“Won’t give up, stand our ground… We’ll be in the streets while you’re #CommanderInChief. Video dropping tomorrow. 🖤 I’m calling on all of you, please join me in voting for this year’s election. Find your voter information at iwillvote.com”
Following her performance at the 2020 Billboard Music Awards, the singer dropped the music video for the said song, that she ended by saying “We’re in a state of crisis, people are dying.” The artist released the news through an Instagram post that reads:
“#CommanderInChief music video is out now🖤 I’m urging you to look out for one another, to support your loved ones, your neighbors, & those you may not have met yet in your community. Place your early votes, or show up to the polls on Nov 3rd. Visit iwillvote.com for your voter info.”
