The frontman of the Grammy Award-winning rock band Bon Jovi, Jon Bon Jovi, and his wife Dorothea Bongiovi featured on PEOPLE’s latest cover story and told of their 31-year marriage, with four children.
When the couple, who first met as teenagers at Sayreville War Memorial High School in New Jersey in 1980, were asked about their secret to keep the marriage strong, Jon Bon Jovi, who is set to launch a new music release in October, answered:
“Mutual respect. Having grown up together and grown together. And we really like each other. We want to hang out.”
Jovi’s high school sweetheart, Dorothea continued:
“I always said I was good at spotting potential too. I have a gift.”
The ‘Livin’ On A Prayer’ rocker, who share four children – 27-year-old Stephanie, 25-year-old Jesse, 18-year-old Jacob, and 16-year-old Romeo with Dorothea, added by telling of how to keep a healthy relationship as husband and wife in the celebs world:
“We work hard at it, but we enjoy each other and we never fell for the trappings of what celebrity can do. We’ve witnessed that happen over the years to people that were close to us and people that we knew from afar. It’s just what I do, it’s not who I am. I write songs. I happen to be very good at performing them. That’s it.”
The legend concluded his words by expressing how happy he is in current with his family:
“I’m happiest, if I like what I do for a living, I’m doing right by my family and I’m making the world just a little bit better.”
